Bulgaria has something for everybody: sun-drenched beaches on the Black Sea, abundant greenery in the central hills and valleys, pine tree-laden mountains in the south east and an array of ancient cities to explore. The pine-covered mountains and unbroken snow make Bulgaria an ideal place for a skiing or snowboarding holiday, while the 378km of sun-drenched beaches alongside the Black Sea are interspersed with fishing villages, isolated vineyards and dreamy peninsulas. The beaches are gently-sloping and current-free making them safe for children, as backed up by its blue flag accreditation.
For recuperation, the natural waters of Serdica (Sofia) and the mud of the Black Sea have provided the basis for 500 spa centers across Bulgaria.
Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, is believed to date back to the 8th Century BC, making it one of the oldest countries in Europe. As such, the architecture is sure to fascinate, with the 10th Century Boyana Church and gold-domed Alexander Neuski Cathedral just two of its building which have made it onto the UNESCO World Heritage List. The National Gallery of Foreign Art and the National Archaeological Museum are highlights amongst the captivating array of galleries and exhibitions but be sure to nip into a tavern and check out the folk music and traditional dances so you can experience the simpler side of Bulgaria’s cultural roots.
Burgas and Varna are both large cities which are situated on the coast of the Black Sea. In the summertime, they can experience up to 11 hours of sunlight a day and the warm temperatures and absence of breeze make them ideal spots for sunbathers. Varna is another ancient city and there you can find all manner of architecture from throughout the ages.
Plovdiv is Bulgaria’s fourth largest city and is steeped in folklore, not to mention all of its beautiful old churches.
Winters can be very cold, with January averaging 0?C, but the summer months are sufficiently warm for holidays spent lazing on the beach. The temperature rarely exceeds 30?C, so it is just right for those who would prefer to avoid excessive heat.
